Are incentives against justice?

چکیده
This paper analyzes the manipulability of the Generalized Money Rawlsian Fair (GMRF) solutions in the problem of fairly allocating objects when monetary compensations are possible [Alkan A., Demange G., Gale D., Fair allocation of indivisible goods and criteria of justice. Econometrica 59, 1023-1039]. These solutions are envy-free, efficient, and satisfy a strong form of solidarity under budget changes. (i) We show that the Nash and strong Nash equilibrium correspondences of the “preference revelation game form” associated with each GMRF solution coincide with the envy-free and efficient solution. Even though each agent has an incentive to lie if the others truthfully report their preferences, in equilibrium, no agent prefers another agent’s allotment to hers according to her true preferences; moreover, in equilibrium, efficiency is preserved according to agents’ true preferences. (ii) As a corollary, we show that GMRF solutions “naturally implement” the envy-free and efficient solution in Nash and strong Nash equilibria. JEL classification: D63, C72.

This paper discusses whether European institutions should devote so much attention and funding to cross-border healthcare or they should instead prioritise guaranteeing universal health coverage (UHC), inequalities and tackling the effects of austerity measures. The paper argues through providing the evidence in both areas of research, that the priority at European level from a public health an...

This point is especially obvious in regard to the current international system for encouraging pharmaceutical innovation, whose incentives are only tenuously related to health outcomes. This system is unsustainable as even the wealthiest countries cannot afford skyrocketing health care costs forever. There are huge collective gains waiting to be realized through reform of how we reward the deve...

We consider the problem of fairly allocating a social endowment of indivisible goods and money when the domain of admissible preferences contains, but is not restricted to, quasi-linear preferences. We analyze the manipulability of the Generalized Money Rawlsian Fair (GMRF) solutions [Alkan A., Demange G., Gale D., 1991. Fair allocation of indivisible goods and criteria of justice. The growth of an economy depends not only on economic factors, but also on institutions, the citizens' trust in them, by the sharing of values and expectations. The differences between public policies and institutions are often regarded as one of the key explanations of the wide differences in levels and growth rates of per capita across countries. Among the institutions that have the greatest ...

The present paper aims in a first stage, to exploit succinctly the cardinal argument – the contract argument-acquainted in " A Theory of Justice " , which provides incentives for the two principles' general adoption. In a second stage, a discussion appraising the feasibility of these two principles and their subsequent empirical adoption will be dealt with. This contributes to the provision of ...
